			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sometimes the only difference between a person who seemingly succeeds and the people who don&#8217;t is their presence and posture.  Those that display a certain degree of self confidence may actually be hiding what is really going on inside.  The irony is that as they &#8216;fake it&#8217; they are building up genuine confidence and gaining in mental, physical, and emotional strength.  You can&#8217;t fake it all the time because eventually you will have to back up the image you project.   However there is no rule against faking it to gain a competitive advantage.</p>

Thus we suppress the child&#8217;s curiosity and then when he lacks a natural interest in learning he is offered special coaching for his scholastic difficulties. ~ Alice Duer Miller</strong></p>
<p>I had a conversation with a very good friend about the learning habits of his daughter. He said he wondered if our children knew the difference between ‘doing homework’ and ‘studying’. I went home and asked my daughter if she was doing her homework or if she was studying. She replied that she was doing homework and since she didn’t have a test there was no studying to do. In fairness to our children, I believe this is learned behavior they get from us as adults. They see us constantly looking for affirmation rather than information when discussing a particular topic. We migrate to people that share a similar position as ours rather than engage in dialogue with people we disagree with. If our children studied more, their homework would be easier. If adults sought information more than groups that agree with them, we would be more informed. From television shows to talk radio, it is simply easier to tune in to people that believe as we do and tune out those whose opinion makes us uncomfortable or we don’t want to bother understanding.</p>
<p>My challenge to you this week is to study with a child. Go over a concept with them that that doesn’t require teacher assigned homework. Breaking the early habit of only studying when there is a test will begin to mold them into the kinds of leaders we need for our future. The irony is that everyday will be a test for them and there is no study period to prepare to pass it. Tests in real life are similar to pop quizzes and they can make or break your final grade. Life tests don’t always give you a warning and leaders are in the habit of studying and preparing for them well in advance. We may not pass all of them but the same concept won’t burn us twice.</p>

		<title>Self Respect &amp; Our Future</title>

<p>Abraham Maslow had a theory that we are motivated according to a hierarchy of needs.  His categories of needs include Physiological, Safety, Love/Belonging, Esteem, and Self Actualization.  His premise of course is that the needs higher up on the pyramid (Self Actualization) cannot be met without meeting the lower needs first.  If that is indeed the case, does that mean a person will never be able to gain self respect or the respect of others (Esteem) without being able to provide food for himself or his/her family first?  A mother’s ability to nurture her children and a father’s need to provide for his family are at the very core of what makes us human.  We are trending toward a dangerous ratio of more children dropping out of school than the number of their parents that graduated.  These are the early warning signs that our children will not be able to provide for themselves or anyone else, therefore leading to a land full of self doubting adults and ill prepared parents for the next generation.  Perhaps Maslow’s theory should be turned upside down and make self respect as important a priority as food and water.</p>
<p>My challenge to you this week is to tell a child or young adult that they matter and you are counting on them for our future.  Tell them that they can count on you to see them through the tough times.  Explain that their self respect will not be measured solely on what they accumulate in life but more importantly what they allocate to others.  Make clear to them that as they get older their ability to provide for themselves and others is dependant on how serious they take their journey today.  The time for coddling and sugar coating is officially over.  Step up and be a leader today and have this conversation with someone who needs it now. </p>
